Back in the day in HP fandom, there tended to be a daily newsfeed with meta, fic, news round ups, et al (but this was back when all the fandom was on LJ and as such, quite centralised). Once a week, we'd have a newsfeed that you got best fanfic of the week, etc. Since LJ strike through and other platforms, fandom has gotten fairly splintered.
The thing with fandom nowadays is that writers tend to be sensitive (and wondering WHY NOT ME ME ME ME) if their fic isn't on the best of. Also, especially with football RPF (the fandom of which we currently share) it's fairly... territorial, and there are just some teams/characters/pairings people won't read for love nor money, and it's not a fandom that offers a lot 'gen' fic.
You have people from various teams wondering why people don't write for their clubs! I do remember seeing two 'best of' end of year lists by individual members of the fandom, but friends tend to rec other friends (although last minute sub had a lot of good fics this year, I will admit).
Probably just as how there are monthly prompt tumblrs for fandom, there could be a monthly rec on, but like you say, fandom is WORK.
No 4. it's just SO LOVELY to think that there are fandoms where you can listen to OTHER PEOPLE read you stories instead of just the sound of your own voice.
I... kinda know your feels? In terms of say writing pairings and getting tired of your own writing (which is why I write prompts for people, tbh, because it keeps me interested and interesting, but I digress). It's like, of COURSE, you can cook your meals and what you eat is serviceable, but sometimes you want to go somewhere else and eat what someone else has prepared because they might add a different spice that makes it all new again!
Also, you can only learn when you see what other people are doing (even if it's just to say, Gracious no, I'd NEVER DO THAT).
Alas, I'm no Radio 4 presenter so my reading voice isn't the greatest. If someone could walk me through Garageband 2017 (YOU HEAR ME FANDOM), I'd give podficcing another attempt and do try to do something.
no 3 isn't self serving at all
